In the town of Camaligan, residents watched in horror as a 50-metre suspension bridge twisted violently under 124 mph winds from Super Typhoon Fung-wong. The bridge, seen swaying in footage shared online, became a symbol of the storm’s destructive power. Locals feared losing their main route across the river as the structure heaved under the pressure.
The typhoon, one of the most powerful to hit the Philippines in 2025, made landfall in Aurora province late Sunday with sustained winds of 115 mph and gusts of 143 mph. It swept across northern Luzon, bringing torrential rain, floods, and landslides that killed at least eight people, including children in Nueva Vizcaya and an elderly resident in Mountain Province. Over 1.4 million people fled their homes, with around 318,000 still sheltering in evacuation centres as of Monday. Entire villages were submerged, while floodwaters and debris isolated mountain communities.

Fung-wong toppled trees, walls, and power lines, causing blackouts across several provinces. Fourteen transmission lines were cut, thousands of homes were destroyed, and over 380 flights were cancelled. Ports across the archipelago halted operations, leaving more than 6,000 travellers stranded. Authorities have declared a state of emergency, as back-to-back typhoons have stretched resources thin following the earlier devastation of Typhoon Kalmaegi.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emphasized that rescue operations continue despite ongoing risks from rain-soaked slopes and damaged infrastructure.
