Unattended campfire destroys union Pacific railroad bridge in Lincoln

A nearly century-old railroad bridge in west Lincoln has been declared a total loss after a fire early Monday morning led to its collapse.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded at approximately 3:45 a.m. to reports of a fire on the Union Pacific bridge over Salt Creek near Westgate and Sun Valley boulevards, close to Pinnacle Bank Arena and Haymarket Park. The bridge, constructed of heavy timber, ignited and continued burning for several hours before collapsing shortly before 5:30 a.m. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials confirmed that an unattended campfire started the blaze. The area is known for tent encampments, and overnight temperatures had fallen into the single digits. Authorities are continuing to investigate and are working to determine whether the incident qualifies as arson. No arrests or citations have been issued.

Access to the bridge proved difficult for emergency crews because surrounding roads have limited weight capacity and could not support full-sized fire engines. Firefighters deployed a brush rig to address grass fires that spread near the structure. Water tankers and assistance from the Air Guard were requested, though freezing conditions complicated suppression efforts. Officials stated the bridge largely burned itself out.

The rail line, used periodically by Union Pacific and BNSF, has been shut down until further notice. Union Pacific confirmed that engineering teams are assessing the damage.

Lincoln Parks and Recreation has closed the paved section of the Salt Creek Levee bike and walking trail near the collapse. Trail users have been directed to a nearby limestone path while repairs and site stabilization continue.
