A decades-old iron bridge spanning the Indrayani River in the Kundmala area of Pune, Maharashtra, collapsed on the afternoon of June 15, 2025. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM during peak monsoon season, a time when the location typically experiences heavy tourist footfall.
At the time of the collapse, nearly 100 individuals were on or near the structure. The collapse resulted in the deaths of at least two people and injuries to 32 others. Six individuals remain in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that a number of people were swept away by the river, with ongoing rescue operations working to locate the missing.
Emergency services were deployed swiftly, including teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and municipal officials. The first responders arrived from Talegaon Dabhade police station, with additional support brought in shortly after. Mechanical equipment and medical teams were also positioned to manage rescue and treatment efforts.
Government officials, including the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, have stated that a structural audit of similar bridges will be conducted. The collapsed bridge, reported to be over 30 years old, had previously raised concerns among residents regarding its safety, particularly during the monsoon season when river levels rise significantly.
A formal investigation into the structural integrity and maintenance history of the bridge is expected to follow once rescue efforts are concluded.
