UK secures £35m steel supply agreement for Türkiye’s Modern Rail Corridors

The announcement of a new £35 million rail supply contract marks a significant development for British steel manufacturing and for ongoing high-speed rail expansion in Türkiye. The agreement, to be formally presented at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, extends previous commitments to support major rail corridors linking several growing urban regions. It follows earlier deliveries of rail products to southern Türkiye, where modernization efforts continue to focus on higher-capacity and lower-emission transport systems.

The contract forms part of a wider package of export agreements valued at more than £400 million. These initiatives aim to strengthen the international presence of UK engineering expertise while generating opportunities within the domestic industrial sector. British steel manufacturers have already supplied products to high-speed routes that connect Mersin with Adana, Osmaniye and Gaziantep. The latest agreement strengthens this collaboration and contributes to continued decarbonization efforts across Türkiye’s rail network.

The new agreement follows government intervention earlier this year to stabilize the Scunthorpe steelworks and prevent closure. Production activities at the plant continue to expand through additional supply agreements and new international partnerships. The contract is also expected to support job creation and long-term operational continuity.

Projects of this scale highlight the continued demand for high-quality steel rail products as countries advance resilient and sustainable transport corridors. With further export opportunities anticipated, the UK steel sector remains positioned to contribute to rail infrastructure programmes in several growing markets.
