A partial building collapse occurred in Glasgow’s city centre on Friday, October 6th, as Storm Amy brought extreme winds and heavy rainfall across Scotland. The incident took place on the Broomielaw, a major thoroughfare near the River Clyde, where debris from a derelict structure fell onto a parked vehicle. Police Scotland confirmed that the eastbound lane between York Street and Oswald Street has been closed to both traffic and pedestrians as a safety precaution.
Authorities reported no injuries, but the event has prompted a detailed inspection of surrounding buildings to ensure their structural stability. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service assisted in securing the site while officers advised the public to avoid the area until it is deemed safe.
Storm Amy, the first named storm of the season, has produced wind gusts reaching nearly 100 mph in parts of western Scotland. Meteorologists from the Met Office issued amber and yellow warnings for wind and rain across most of the region, warning of risks to both transport and infrastructure.
Structural experts note that such weather events can exacerbate weaknesses in older or neglected buildings, particularly those exposed to prolonged moisture and vibration. Local authorities have been urged to reassess the stability of unoccupied structures within the city’s centre, especially along heavily trafficked routes.
The Glasgow City Council has implemented temporary closures and rerouted traffic in response to safety concerns. Engineers and building inspectors will conduct evaluations to determine whether the collapse was directly linked to wind loading or pre-existing deterioration.
Meanwhile, Storm Amy continues to cause widespread disruption, with rail, ferry, flight cancellations and leaving thousand of homes without electricity across Scotland. The government has urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve.
