A building collapse in downtown Benton on Wednesday afternoon has caused significant structural damage and prompted a multi-agency emergency response, following days of heavy snow and ice accumulation across the region.
The collapse occurred at approximately 2:27 p.m. local time and involved a commercial building that housed CJ’z Downtown Billiards, a long-standing business in the city centre. Officials confirmed that at least three adjacent buildings sustained damage to their front façades as a result of the failure, raising concerns about the structural stability of surrounding properties.
Emergency crews, including local and regional search-and-rescue teams, were deployed to the site shortly after the incident. Responders worked to safely navigate the debris field while coordinating efforts to shut down utilities in the affected area, including electrical power, as a precautionary measure. Authorities indicated that access to some portions of the collapse zone remained restricted during the initial response phase due to safety risks.

Preliminary assessments by city officials suggest that the collapse was likely caused by excessive loading from accumulated snow and ice associated with the recent winter storm system. Similar weather-related structural failures have been reported elsewhere in the region, particularly involving older or lightly framed commercial buildings not designed for prolonged heavy snow loads.
At the time of the collapse, it was unclear whether anyone was inside the affected structures. Officials later stated that no injuries had been confirmed, and the business owners publicly indicated that all staff were safe.
Cleanup operations began once emergency crews completed initial safety checks, with further inspections planned to determine whether nearby buildings will require partial demolition, repair, or continued closure. Local authorities said detailed structural evaluations will be carried out in the coming days to assess broader risks within the downtown area.
