Partial wall collapse at Bronx demolition site triggers DOB investigation

A partial wall collapse occurred on Monday afternoon at a permitted demolition site on East Burnside Avenue in the Bronx, prompting an immediate investigation by the New York City Department of Buildings. A section of the exterior wall, estimated at approximately 40 feet in length, detached during demolition activities and fell onto the sidewalk shed and adjacent roadway. Debris extended roughly 15 feet onto the sidewalk and into Walton Avenue, affecting pedestrian protection systems and necessitating temporary traffic control.

Emergency services, including the Fire Department of the City of New York, responded shortly before 3:00 p.m. to secure the area and manage road access. No injuries were reported.

According to preliminary findings, the site was already subject to a Full Stop Work Order issued on January 7 following a proactive Construction Safety Enforcement audit. The audit identified multiple safety violations, including demolition activities conducted out of sequence, non-compliant scaffolding, missing guardrails, and inadequate safety zoning. Department records also indicate recent complaints related to unsafe demolition practices and scaffold installation without proper permits.

DOB inspectors remain on site as part of an active investigation to determine the technical and procedural causes of the collapse. The focus includes compliance with approved demolition plans, temporary works stability, and contractor adherence to site safety protocols. Findings from the investigation are expected to inform potential enforcement actions and corrective measures before any work may resume.
