The Menai Suspension Bridge, a critical link between Anglesey and mainland Wales, has been temporarily closed following the discovery of deteriorated bolts on beams beneath the structure. Engineers working under the Welsh Government’s Phase 2 maintenance programme recommended the urgent closure after inspections revealed safety concerns that could compromise the bridge’s load-bearing capacity.
Initially, a 3-tonne weight restriction was introduced; however, enforcement challenges and non-compliance by heavy vehicles led authorities to close the bridge entirely on October 4. The Welsh Government, confirmed the decision as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety. Traffic has been diverted to the nearby Britannia Bridge, resulting in congestion and delays for residents and commuters.
The closure has caused widespread disruption across Anglesey, where over 13,000 vehicles typically use the bridge daily. Local representatives, including Ynys Môn MP Llinos Medi and MS Rhun ap Iorwerth, called for improved planning and long-term resilience strategies to prevent repeated closures of key transport links. Businesses in Menai Bridge town centre have also been affected, with many reporting reduced footfall and delivery challenges.
Emergency access protocols have been established to ensure continuity of critical services should adverse weather impact the Britannia Bridge. Meanwhile, engineers continue structural assessments to develop a robust reopening strategy.
The bridge, which dates back over 200 years, has undergone several restoration phases in recent years, including major safety works in 2022 and repainting in 2024. Authorities have emphasized that safety remains the top priority while investigations continue. The Welsh Government aims to establish stricter enforcement measures and an updated maintenance timetable once repairs are completed.
