Crane collapse into an apartment building in Dallas

A crane collapsed into an apartment building killing at least one person in Dallas.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 9, 2019. The crane fell onto the eastern side of the residential building destroying apartments and the parking lot. "We just saw cars everywhere. I don't even know how to describe it. There were cars that were vertical, there was cars from maybe the eighth floor all the way down into the third floor where we park," Abbey Kearney who lives in the apartment building, stated.

The collapse was caused due to high winds that reached more than 110 km/h. Another resident, Isaiah Allen who was inside his apartment when the crane collapsed said: “I saw that the crane had actually fell straight through the building and had destroyed a good eight to 10 apartments and so there’s like floors and stuff falling through.” 

The Fire Department of Dallas quickly sent rescue teams to search for survivors in the debris. According to local media, one person lost his life and 6 more were injured, 2 of them in critical condition. Jason Evans, a fire rescue spokesman, stated that there was no one else found inside the apartments.

Mr. Evans pointed out that it was a strange incident as crane collapses usually occur in buildings that are under construction. "This is a really challenging situation in the sense that I cannot personally recall that we've had a crane collapse that involved an already inhabited building," he said. "Our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted by this incident. We only hope that the damage that's been inflicted thus far is where it stops," he added.

The storm that caused the powerful winds in the area, also damaged properties, devastated trees and caused power outages in a large region across north Texas.
