Passenger train derailed in the Netherlands after collision with construction crane

A passenger train collided with a crane near Voorschoten, the Netherlands, around 3.25 a.m. in the early morning of Tuesday.

The authorities reported that the train was carrying at least 50 people, and was moving from Leiden to The Hague, when it collided with a construction crane.

One person lost their life in the accident, while at least 30 more were reported injured and were initially treated on the spot. Ambulances and a helicopter were mobilized to the accident’s location and 19 seriously injured passengers were carried to hospitals.

The train consisted of four carriages, and as can be seen from photographic footage, the first one landed in a nearby field, while the second one derailed on its side. The fourth carriage reportedly caught on fire, which was shortly after extinguished.

The Leiden Central Station remains closed after the event and no trains are expected to run from the city until at least 4 p.m. local time.
