Passenger train derailed near Cairo, Egypt

A derailment took place on Tuesday night, when a train heading from Cairo to Menouf, a city in the Nile delta, crashed on a concrete buffer stop.

More specifically, the accident took place in the city of Qalyub, north of Cairo.

The aftermath of the event has so far had 4 people losing their lives and another 23 injured.

What has been known so far is that the train driver failed to follow the direction signal and two cars were derailed in the crash, the engine and the first car. Following questioning, the train driver was detained.

It is worth mentioning that train accidents are not uncommon in Egypt and, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, an average of 1,041 accidents took place each year from 2004 to 2016, including many serious ones.

The Egyptian government has made plans to spend $11.7 billion on rail infrastructure by 2024.
