A collision between two express trains occurred shortly after 10:00 AM local time near the village of Jablonov nad Turnou in the Rožňava district of southeastern Slovakia, at a location where dual tracks converge into a single line.
The national rail operator ZSSK initially reported 30 injuries, with two cases classified as serious; later statements from the Health Minister placed the number at 91 injured, though the discrepancy remains under review.
Among the approximately 80 passengers and four ZSSK employees aboard, most injuries were minor but emergency services responded with urgency, deploying three helicopters to airlift the most severely hurt to hospitals.
No deaths have been confirmed at this stag. Emergency teams including firefighters, police, and paramedics quickly arrived at the site, and train services on the affected section were suspended while replacement buses were arranged.
According to Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok, preliminary indicators suggest human error, with one driver possibly failing to yield to the other, though an official investigation is underway to determine the precise cause.
One train remained on the tracks, while the other derailed and came to rest precariously over a slope. Services on the line are projected to resume on Tuesday, pending clearance and safety assessments.
