Geo-infrastructure is inherently large and spans a wide range of variable site conditions, while also being subject to evolving environmental conditions. At the same time, the rise of automation, sensing, and big data in geotechnical engineering requires managing increasing amounts of data that, in some cases, demand specialization and expertise. Translating these growing volumes of disparate data into valuable information remains a challenge.
Digital twins can help geotechnical engineers and geo-infrastructure owners to translate data into information and information into insights. They provide a native way to communicate information and generate insights that drive decision-making and action, with the goal of enhancing the efficiency, resiliency, and sustainability of geo-infrastructure.
The presenters will discuss the practical value of digital twins in geotechnical engineering and present specific examples of digital twins that bring this data together and help understand and communicate information, maintain, and upgrade infrastructure.
Meet the Speakers
Dimitrios Zekkos, Ph.D., P.E.
Professor, UC Berkeley
Dimitrios Zekkos is a Professor at the University of California at Berkeley with a focus on geotechnical engineering. His research advances the resiliency of infrastructure systems against natural hazards such as earthquakes and climate hazards such as storms, hurricanes, and monsoons by integrating multi-scale sensing data (remotely and on/in the ground) with next-generation computational models. Dimitrios has worked in more than 10 countries worldwide in natural disaster response, consulting, or research roles. He is presently a co-director of the Berkeley Center for Smart Infrastructure, co-Principal Investigator of the NSF Center for Land Surface Hazards (CLaSH) and Chair of the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance Association (GEER). His research has been funded by NSF, NASA, USGS, EPA, the World Bank, as well as industry partners, and is recognized through awards from organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).
John Manousakis, P.E.
Head of Geospatial Engineering & Reality Modeling, ARGO-E GROUP
John Manousakis is Head of Geospatial Engineering & Reality Modeling at ARGO-E Group, an infrastructure technology firm. He has more than 25 years of experience working on complex infrastructure projects and leveraging LiDAR, UAV, and satellite data to provide solutions. He has authored several scientific papers on leveraging these technologies in geotechnical engineering, including ports, landfills, landslides and has been serving as international consultant in critical infrastructure projects. He has been leading the development of digital twin technologies.
