Sand deposits to protect Gas station facility and 2 villages from the sea

A project to deposit large quantities of sand in a coastal area protecting Bacton Gas Terminal and two villages from the sea was approved by U.K. Norfolk council.

The attempts include the placement of about 1 million m³ of sand in front of Bacton Gas Terminal and 0.5-0.8 million m³ in front of the villages of Bacton and Walcott covering an area of 5.7 kilometers length.

The project, that requires the cooperation of North Norfolk District Council, Bacton Terminal Operators and the Environment Agency of U.K., is estimated to cost between $21,5 million and $28 million.

According to experts, expanding the area of beaches is an efficient way to protect coastal facilities and residences that are threatened. 

The next phase includes the designation of the contractor, the confirmation of funding and the acquirement of the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) license. Construction works may begin in spring 2019.

“This is an essential piece of work to protect both our Norfolk villages and nationally important infrastructure. It is an exciting project that will put North Norfolk on the map for leading the way in innovative technology solutions, tackling climate change on our doorstep,” said Sarah Butikofer, leader of North Norfolk District Council.
