River Cole Scheme Blends Civil Engineering and Ecology

HS2 has successfully completed the 749-metre realignment of the River Cole in Warwickshire, marking the most significant river diversion on the high-speed rail project. The works were required to enable construction of the Birmingham Spur at the Delta Junction, one of the most complex sections of the HS2 route. 

The new channel incorporates nature-based solutions to enhance ecological resilience and biodiversity. Meandering bends and asymmetric cross-sections create varied aquatic habitats, while floodplain reconfiguration ensures resilience against both low and high flow conditions. Biodegradable matting and coir pallets have been used to establish native vegetation, supporting erosion control and habitat stability.

Extensive hydraulic modelling confirmed that the scheme would not increase downstream flood risks. Instead, the reconfiguration created new flood storage areas and culverts, ensuring long-term hydrological stability. The project also reused natural gravels from the floodplain to form the riverbed, reducing carbon emissions while improving aquatic habitats for fish and invertebrates.

Beyond its technical success, the project has also prioritised community integration. New pathways, grassed embankments, observation areas, and water features such as stepping stones will enhance public accessibility once the site reopens. This initiative forms part of HS2’s wider Green Corridor programme, designed to establish resilient, interconnected habitats and create recreational spaces for communities along the route.
