Magna Tram Train station reaches bridge and lift milestone, advancing lower Don Valley connectivity

The new Magna Tram Train station in Rotherham has reached a key construction stage with the installation of twin lift shafts and a passenger overbridge. The scheme is a £10 million investment scheduled to open in early 2026 as the first additional stop on the Tram Train network since 2018. The station will provide step free access, fully accessible platforms, and a Park and Ride facility that supports smoother interchange between Sheffield and Rotherham while easing traffic in the Lower Don Valley.

The project is part of a wider programme to improve Supertram assets and operations through 2027. Planned enhancements include vehicle renewals, control systems upgrades, and power supply improvements. Together, these interventions are intended to raise network resilience, improve capacity for daily flows, and cut local emissions by shifting trips from private cars to public transport.

Construction has also emphasised regional supply chain involvement with key steel components fabricated locally. Throughout delivery, Tram Train services continue to operate. A short period of Saturday evening bus substitution is in place between Meadowhall South, Rotherham Central, and Parkgate, with a full service confirmed to resume from six December.
