Heathrow Airport commits £1.3bn to major terminal and operational upgrades in 2026

Heathrow Airport has confirmed a £1.3 billion capital investment programme for 2026, targeting terminal infrastructure, baggage handling, accessibility, and operational efficiency across the airport. The funding forms part of Heathrow’s five-year H7 investment period and is intended to enhance passenger experience while strengthening the airport’s nationwide supply chain.

A central element of the programme is the long-planned redevelopment of Terminal 4. Construction will begin with a new multi-storey car park and a fully upgraded check-in hall. Works will be carefully phased to maintain uninterrupted terminal operations and are scheduled for completion by 2031.

At Terminal 2, Heathrow will commence construction of a dedicated baggage handling system capable of processing up to 31,000 bags per day. The system is designed knowing to improve resilience, reduce misconnected luggage, and lower operational costs for airlines through improved flow and automation.

Operational performance will also be enhanced through the rollout of an AI-enabled camera network across aircraft stands. The system will analyse real-time data to reduce turnaround times, improve punctuality, and optimise ground handling coordination, with full deployment expected by the end of 2026.

Targeted investment will improve facilities for passengers with accessibility needs, including a new purpose-built assistance area in Terminal 2 offering direct access to security screening. Additional mobility equipment and upgraded assistance zones will be introduced airport-wide, supported by Heathrow’s new Tailored Travel Guide.

Heathrow chief executive Thomas Woldbye stated that the programme is intended to ensure continuous improvements in reliability, efficiency, and passenger experience.
