The Fengyi Bridge, inaugurated in May, stands as a monumental achievement in civil engineering and urban design. Located in the Xi’an High-tech Industries Development Zone, this bridge is not only the world's widest multi-tower cable-stayed bridge but also a testament to innovative design and engineering prowess. Arup, a global leader in engineering, provided comprehensive services to bring this ambitious project to life.
Engineering Marvel and Design Excellence
Stretching 526 meters in length and 57 meters in width, the Fengyi Bridge features a three-tower structure supporting a five-lane dual carriageway. This impressive construction accommodates pedestrian and bicycle paths on both sides, transforming the bridge into a vibrant public destination. The integration of these paths also serves as scenic viewing platforms, enhancing the bridge's utility and aesthetic appeal.

Arup's multidisciplinary approach encompassed everything from architecture and landscape design to structural engineering. The bridge's mono-pole shaped towers, reaching a height of 95 meters, are both structurally efficient and visually striking. The fan-shaped cable distribution not only provides robust support but also blends harmoniously with Xi’an's natural environment.
Cultural Integration and Human-Centric Design
Drawing inspiration from Xi’an’s rich cultural heritage, the Fengyi Bridge’s design is both innovative and symbolic. The three-tower structure mirrors the iconic mountain peaks surrounding the city, while the cable system reflects the local silk industry, resembling woven silk threads. This thoughtful design ensures that the bridge is more than just a means of crossing; it is a celebration of Xi’an’s legacy and a public space that encourages community interaction.
The Fengyi Bridge is a shining example of how engineering can seamlessly integrate with cultural heritage and natural beauty to create functional yet inspiring public infrastructure. By promoting the concept of municipal facilities as public spaces, this bridge sets a new standard for future urban development projects.
