The energy upgrade of EU buildings could save 80-153 billion Euros until 2050 in investment funds that would otherwise be directed to energy production.
Ecofys estimates that through energy upgrade of buildings, the demand for electricity could be reduced by 57 gigawatts in Europe.
The European Union is expected to move away from fossil fuel boilers, oil or gas and encourage the heating through heat pumps, which convert electrical energy into heat.
The energy upgrading of buildings provides flexibility by smoothing peak demands, resulting in less investment with regards to electricity production.
The efficient homes will be able to maintain internal temperatures for a longer time even when the heating is stopped. Such a possibility would lead to additional reduction in energy demand by 12 gigawatts.
