CSSC Haizhuang’s H260-18MW offshore wind turbine, which was unveiled earlier this year, is the largest and most powerful of its kind with a potential of powering up to 40,000 homes.
As the name suggests, the turbine features a blade diameter of 260 meters and an 18MW capacity rating.
Looking at the formula for wind turbine power generation P = 0.5*Cp*ρ*π*R²*V³, where Cp is a performance coefficient, ρ is the air density, R the blade’s length and V the wind speed, one can realize that in the world of offshore wind turbines bigger is better.
Furthermore, the H260-18MW can generate 44.8 kilowatt hours per revolution under full wind speed, meaning that just one turbine can potentially generate 74 million KWh per year, the equivalent of energy needed to power 40,000 homes.
The company claims that for the installation of a 1GW capacity offshore wind farm about 55 turbines would be needed, or 13% less compared to 16 MW capacity ones.
Finally, CSSC Haizhuang calculated that the model would cut down coal consumption by 25,000 tons per year and would relieve the environment of an annual 61,000 tons of carbon emissions, in addition to greatly helping China achieve its 2060 net zero emissions goals.
