Bangkok has unveiled a concept for a dedicated pedestrian and cycling bridge across the Chao Phraya River, designed to connect Song Wat Road in the historic Phra Nakhon district with the Thonburi side near Wat Thong Thammachat. The proposal, currently in the study and preliminary design stage, aims to provide a human-scale river crossing in a corridor currently served primarily by road bridges and ferry services.

Positioned between Phra Pok Klao Bridge and King Taksin Bridge, the new crossing would introduce a continuous, car-free route for daily commuters and visitors. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration confirmed that the project is undergoing environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedures and will require review and budget approval by the Bangkok Metropolitan Council before construction can proceed.
The concept design, developed by MVRDV, features a sculptural steel lattice structure forming a semi-enclosed walkway. The span is expected to extend more than 300 metres across the river, with a width of at least six metres. At mid-river, the deck widens into a landscaped public plaza with stepped terraces, seating platforms and planting zones, allowing the bridge to function not only as transport infrastructure but also as public space.
Structural clearance has been integrated into the design to accommodate express boats and cargo barges, with piers located to maintain river flow conditions. The lattice geometry also functions as passive shading, filtering tropical sunlight while allowing natural ventilation from the river.
Officials have outlined three primary objectives: creating a new non-religious landmark for Bangkok, extending tourism between Old Town and Thonburi, and generating additional economic activity along the riverfront.

If approved, the bridge would become Bangkok’s second pedestrian-only river crossing, reinforcing the city’s broader strategy to enhance walkability and improve riverfront connectivity.
