Vortex Bladeless, a Spain-based company, has designed a wind turbine which takes advantage of the wind in a new way! While the traditional turbines’ principle is action-reaction, this vertical rod waves back and forth with the resonance of resisted wind to create an oscillation effect, the energy of which can be used to generate electricity. Its sleek design allows it to generate electricity 40% cheaper compared to conventional wind turbines, and the lack of blades eliminates noise and harm to birds. Field tests are currently being performed with scaled models and they aim to enter the prototype phase via crowdfunding.
