Their strategy, apart from being profitable and sustainable, is also life-changing for the local environment
The lifestyle apparel company Tentree was founded in 2012 in Saskatchewan, Canada by five friends who love the outdoors. Due to their social and environmental consciousness, their business plan is to plant ten trees for every item purchased, allowing consumers to have a direct impact on the environment and communities worldwide.
Since 2012, a little less than 10 million trees have been planted. Almost half of them are in Madagascar (about 5 million), and the rest in Senegal, Nepal, Ethiopia, India, Malawi, Kenya, Canada, Haiti, Cambodia and the US. The company’s biggest project is located in Mahabana, Madagascar, where the trees have helped revitalize the entire village. When the project started, there were 40 people in the village. Within the last few years, it is strictly ‘Tentree’ supported and the population moved up to over 450 people working full-time. Furthermore, wild life is coming back into the village, and so do the fish and the fishermen. Apart from their environmental approach, the company also supports fair wages and equal rights, and they are still sustainable, leading the way for the rest of the companies to follow their example. Upon customer request, the company is working to expand further into both Europe and Asia in the future.
