Aging bridge breaks in two in Madhya Pradesh, injuring four

An old bridge on the Bareilly–Pipariya road in Madhya Pradesh experienced a sudden structural collapse on Monday morning, splitting at its central span and dropping directly into the river below. Two motorcycles were crossing the structure at the time, and all four riders fell with the failing deck. They sustained serious injuries and were transported to Bareli Civil Hospital before being referred to Bhopal for further treatment. No fatalities were reported. The collapse occurred around 10 a.m., shortly after labourers working beneath the bridge had moved away, narrowly avoiding a mass-casualty event.

Local officials confirmed the bridge dates back to the 1980s or early 1990s. Repair works had been underway below the deck in recent days. Residents reported that the deteriorating condition of the structure had been highlighted previously, with concerns raised about visible distress and delayed maintenance. Initial observations suggest progressive weakening of the substructure may have reduced the bridge’s capacity to withstand routine loads. The falling mid-span indicates potential shear or bearing-related failure mechanisms aggravated by age and deferred rehabilitation.

Authorities from the district administration, including the SHO, SDOP and Tehsildar, reached the site immediately to assess stability and close the route. Villagers noted that a bus was scheduled to cross only minutes later, underscoring the severity of the near miss. Investigations are now examining possible negligence by the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation. Traffic remains diverted as structural engineers evaluate residual risks and determine the extent of required reconstruction.
