Structural Deterioration Leads to Fatal Bridge Failure of Gambhira Bridge

A major bridge collapse occurred on 9 July 2025 in Gujarat’s Vadodara district when a section of the 40-year-old Gambhira-Mujpur bridge gave way during peak traffic hours. The structure, which spans the Mahisagar River and connects Anand and Vadodara districts, failed suddenly, sending four vehicles into the river and resulting in nine confirmed fatalities.

Authorities reported that a slab between two piers detached completely. Visual evidence and eyewitness accounts point to a loud cracking sound moments before the collapse. Emergency crews, including the National Disaster Response Force and fire brigade teams, were deployed for immediate rescue and recovery operations.

Past inspection reports had flagged several concerns. These included steel deck and catwalk deterioration, localized corrosion, rising maintenance costs, and frequent traffic delays. Local officials confirmed the bridge was repaired periodically, but residents claimed visible damage remained unaddressed. Reports also noted that the structure was experiencing increasing stress from daily usage, carrying about 7,500 vehicles daily with 30% commercial traffic.

Investigations are now underway to determine the technical cause of failure. The Road and Building Department has been instructed to conduct a full structural assessment. The government has also announced ex-gratia compensation for victims’ families and the injured.
