The MSG Sphere is, among other things, the world’s largest video screen, featuring 580,000 square footage of fully programmable LED exterior.
It is located next to the Las Vegas Strip and east of the Venetian resort in Las Vegas, U.S.A.
Costing $2.3 billion to be constructed, the project is also the most expensive entertainment venue in the history of Las Vegas.
The project was announced in 2018 and broke ground in 2019 with an initial scheduled completion in 2021 and at a budget of $1.2 billion. However, the Covid-19 pandemic caused supply disruptions that led to construction suspension in April of 2020 and a budget increase.
On the 4th of July, the 366 feet (112 m) high by 516 feet (157 m) wide structure’s LED exterior lighted up for the first time.
The impressive panel consists of about 1.2 million LED pucks, spaced eight inches apart, and each containing 48 LED diodes, capable of displaying 256 million different colors.
As for the sphere’s purpose, it will be a concert venue that will provide a 4D immersive experience. In addition to the eye-catching display panels, the sphere will include changing temperature and scent technologies, along with a state-of-the-art sound system.
The MSG Sphere can seat about 18,000 spectators and has room for another 20.000 standing.
Finally, its opening is scheduled for the 29th of September with a U2 concert, part of the U2: UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere.
