Sunderland’s £44M Marvellous New Wear Footbridge Project Paves the Way for Future Growth

Sunderland’s skyline is set to change dramatically with the near completion of the New Wear Footbridge, a £44 million investment that will serve as a crucial link between the former Vaux Brewery site and the Sheepfolds area. The final steel section was installed in September, and work is now focused on placing 91 concrete deck panels, each measuring 10 meters wide, onto the 250-meter-long structure. This bridge is a central part of the £500 million Riverside Sunderland development, an ambitious urban regeneration project aimed at reshaping the city’s future.

A specially designed trolley system has been deployed to precisely position the deck panels, ensuring structural integrity. Once installation is complete, the final phase of deck construction will begin. The footbridge is more than just a crossing—it’s a symbol of Sunderland’s transformation, creating a seamless connection across the River Wear and unlocking 32 hectares of prime development land in the heart of the city.
