The newly completed Keel Crossing in Sunderland has officially opened to the public, marking a milestone in the city’s infrastructure and urban connectivity. The £31 million pedestrian and cycle bridge links Keel Square with the Sheepfolds area and the Stadium of Light, significantly reducing travel time for visitors and residents moving between the city centre and the stadium.
Originally unveiled temporarily during the Women’s Rugby World Cup earlier this year, the bridge underwent final enhancements before its formal opening, which was celebrated by fans crossing ahead of the Sunderland vs. Wolves football match. City officials highlighted the project’s role in expanding Sunderland’s central district and enhancing access to both entertainment and commercial areas.
Named in tribute to the city’s historic shipbuilding industry, the Keel Crossing embodies a blend of modern engineering and cultural legacy. The bridge’s walkway includes the Keel Line, engraved with the names of vessels once built on Wearside, serving as a lasting nod to Sunderland’s industrial heritage.

Constructed over two years, the bridge’s prefabricated sections were manufactured in Ghent, Belgium, and transported via the River Wear for assembly. The project involved advanced modular construction techniques and careful logistical planning to minimize disruption and ensure precision installation.
The new crossing supports both pedestrian and cycling traffic, promoting sustainable urban mobility. It also contributes to the regeneration of the Sheepfolds area, helping to unify the city’s key recreational, cultural, and business zones.
With its elegant structure and strong community symbolism, the Keel Crossing represents Sunderland’s ongoing commitment to infrastructure renewal and city-wide accessibility.
