European Union announces €7 billion sustainable transport funding

The European Commission announced on September 26 the launch of a €7 billion funding program for the development of sustainable key transport infrastructure, under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport.

This funding comes in the form of an open call for proposals, which will remain open until January 30, 2024, while eligible applicants will be Member States and international organizations, including public or private bodies, established within a Member State and which have granted the state’s consent.

Selected projects will be aimed at upgrading and improving the trans-European transport network (TEN-T), in terms of railways, inland waterways, maritime and inland ports, and roads.

Furthermore, the development of these projects is scheduled to help the EU meet its carbon emission goals and decrease transportation emissions by 90% by 2050 though a sustainable trans-European network.

On top of this, focus will be given to the enhancement of the network’s safety and interoperability, as well as its resilience to natural disasters.
