Drones will soon be used in the fight against littering

The United Arab Emirates’ city of Dubai has been using a drone in order to monitor the landfill sites at Al Ghusais, Jebel Ali and Al Warsan, an experiment that proved to be very successful, due to a drone’s ability to navigate areas that humans simply can’t reach. As a result, the Dubai’s Municipality Waste Management Department decided to expand drones’ use to monitoring the city’s popular beaches and desert camp sites destinations, in order to keep them free of waste. The drones will monitor the areas of interest and help catch people in the act of littering, as they will provide the Department with data and aerial photographs.

“Since they are very cost effective, we expect to have two more drones later this year, which will carry out inspections across deserts and beaches”, said Abdul Majeed Al Saifaie, Waste Management Department director. “The main beneficial factor is the amount of time these drones can save. Instead of having municipality inspectors driving across the city, the drones will be able to fly directly to a number of different locations within a short time, and provide us with data and high-resolution photographs’’, he continues. According to Al Saifaie, the drones will not only monitor those setting up camp at beaches and deserts, but will also be on the lookout for trucks that dump waste illegally. Those caught red-handed will face Dubai’s incredibly strict punishment for littering of any kind.
