Did you know that the pulp and paper industry is one of the largest and most polluting industries in the world and the third most polluting industry in North America? Studies show that it releases well over 100 million kg of toxic pollution each year! And as far as energy is concerned, this industry is the fifth largest consumer worldwide, accounting for 4% of the whole world’s energy use. Despite the recycling efforts, paper can only be recycled a maximum of 7 times and every time virgin fibers must be added anyway, so more trees must be cut. Each ton of paper needs around 18 trees and many tons of water in order to be produced.

Two innovators from Melbourne, Glenn Hendriks and Kevin Garcia, wanted to create a stylish and user-friendly planner, made from the best and unique materials available. After conducting a survey in 2015, they turned to stone paper, an earth-friendly alternative to paper. So, they created Hustle Planner, the world’s first planner made from stone paper, a material estimated to one day replace paper as we know it. In March 2016, they made the first prototype and to support their cause, they are currently running a crowd-funding campaign with the first deliveries expected to take place in December. The notebook is available in two colors: navy and stone gray, with interesting content designed by experts (ex. goal setting, weekly inspirational quotes, and bucket list among others).

What is Stone Paper?

Stone Paper is a completely wood pulp-free paper. It consists of 80% Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) and 20% HDPE (high-density polytheme) – a non-toxic plastic used to bind the particles of crushed stone together. The CaCO3 is collected as waste material at existing limestone quarries and is ground up into a fine white chalk powder. No water, acid, base or bleach is used during its production. The product is of high quality, tough, difficult to tear and fully waterproof, and also photo-degradable and compostable. It needs significantly less energy to be produced and has a carbon footprint 67% lower than that of pulp paper. Stone paper creates no waste and can be recycled repeatedly without degradation. It looks almost identical to regular paper, but with a much brighter white tone, and it can absorb almost all ink types like regular paper.
