Biodegradable food packaging that uses no plastics, additives, glue or chemicals
Packaging –and especially food packaging- is an important environmental problem, as it is often used only for just a short period of time and then discharged. For next generations’ sake, Pedram Zolgadri and Carolin Fiechter decided to create sustainable and biodegradable tableware that could replace plastic and paper plates that are commonly used nowadays. After years of designing, prototyping and testing, they managed to develop a set of products made of nothing but leaves and now their Munich-based start-up Leaf Republic aims to revolutionize the packaging market. The ‘green’ plates are biodegradable in only 28 days and no trees have been cut for their production. “We spend only a brief moment on this world. Everything we own is only temporary. What really counts is what we create, what we build up. What counts are our actions and our decisions. They last forever. They make up the true value of our being. If these actions lead to building up a sustainable, social, gainful company, then we will have the greatest job in the world”, the company points out in its site.
The technology
The innovative plates consist of a bottom and top layer made from leaves, stitched together with fibers from palm leaves. And in between, there is a water-proof leaf-made layer of paper, which means that no synthetical additives, coloring or glue are used. The products are accompanied by a lid made from bioplastic or recycled plastic.
The crowdfunding campaign was successfully completed last July, but purchases can still be made via Amazon (DE), (UK), (IT), (FR) and (ES).
