7-story building partially collapses in New York

A seven-story building partially collapsed in the Bronx of New York, on the afternoon of Monday, December 11.

Furthermore, it has so far been reported that the collapse took place at around 3:30 p.m., while the building is located at 1915 Billingsley Terrace, and one of its exterior corners can be seen missing in the footage that has emerged.

The 96-year-old building consists of 47 residential units and six businesses.

According to the Fire Department, there was no loss of life in the event, but two people suffered minor injuries while evacuating.

Several news outlets, such as the New York Times and CBS, reported that a $2,400 fine had been issued to the building’s owner roughly a month prior to the collapse, concerning “deteriorated and broken mudsills” at a property’s sidewalk shed.

Additionally, James Oddo, commissioner of New York City’s Department of Buildings said on the day of the collapse that the last report submitted by the owner was in March 2021, and included unsafe conditions such as masonry cracks and deteriorating mortar.

Mr. Oddo went on to say that at the time of the collapse there were seven open violations regarding the property, but none of them were structural.

The building did have an active permit, valid until next summer, but there had been drawings submitted to pull it, while work was carried out on it a few days prior to the event.

Finally, an investigation is underway, but the exact reasons behind the collapse have not been determined yet.
