A 100-year-old 5-storey abandoned building collapsed in Istanbul on Thursday, April 6.
Furthermore, the collapsed building of Beyazıt Han was located in the Karaköy district of Istanbul and was a tailors’ hub second-degree registered historical monument.
Partial collapse of the building took place at 6.30 a.m. and the authorities responded by taping the surrounding area off, in addition to nearby buildings being evacuated.
The building’s total collapse occurred at 3 p.m., following roughly nine hours of parts falling off the building.
There were no reported injuries and Istanbul Municipality teams started removing debris shortly after the building’s collapse.
It is worth mentioning that the Conservation Board had approved the historic building’s restoration and retrofitting in 2015, and the corresponding license was issued in 2016. However, the works were never initiated by the owner, as stated by the head of the municipality’s Cultural Assets Department, Oktay Özel.
Finally, the event revived a debate about Istanbul’s roughly 3,500 similar structures’ future.
