Despite making impressive progress over the last 20 years, Athens still lacks major infrastructure projects that most developed cities have.
Athens is the largest city and capital of Greece. It sprawls across the central plain of Attica and is surrounded by four large mountains: Mount Aigaleo to the west, Mount Parnitha to the north, Mount Pentelicus to the northeast and Mount Hymettus to the east. Athens consists one of the biggest economic centers in Europe and its port Piraeus is the largest passenger port in Europe and the second largest worldwide.
Despite Greece's relatively small population in comparison with other European countries, Athens hosts about 4.5 million people and is one of biggest cities in the continent.
The city went through a long period of infrastructure development, especially during the preparations for the 2004 Olympic Games. However, some factors, including the economic crisis that emerged in 2009, have slowed down the city's development which still lacks of major projects that advanced cities have.
As tourism industry is significantly developing in Greece, Athens should not miss the opportunity to acquire the infrastructure all the advanced cities in Europe (e.g. Madrid, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, London) already have.
Expects from Ypodomes.com have gathered the 10-main projects that Athens needs to obtain in the future. These are presented below:
1. A Metropolitan Park
2. An extensive Metro network (generally an extensive network of fixed-rail transport)
3. Covered Market
4. Central Railway Station
5. Inter-urban buses Terminal
6. Bicycle pathways network
7. City
8. Accessibility infrastructure for the disabled
9. Electric buses fleet
10. Waste treatment facilities
