A Webuild-led consortium has recently won yet another tender on the Sicilian high speed railway project.
Furthermore, the awarded contract concerns the construction of the 30-kilometer Fiumetorto-Lercara Junction (Lot 1+2) of the Palermo-Catania-Messina rail axis. It is also worth mentioning that this section comes to be added to an additional six of the same project, which have already been awarded to webuild.
The consortium consists of Webuild at a stake of 75% and partner Ghella at 25%, while the total budget of the contract, awarded by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), comes at €1.32 billion.
Breaking down the project, it will include 20 kilometers of twin tunnels constructed by four tunnel boring machines (TBMs), more than two kilometers of road and rail viaducts and more than seven kilometers of roads, according to the winning company. In addition, the new Valle del Torto railway station will be constructed, and the existing Cerda and Lercara ones will be upgraded.
Finally, rainwater will be recovered and be reused during the industrial process, while the stations will also be equipped with rainwater capturing systems.
