Vienna’s U2 Line Achieves Major Tunnelling Milestone

A major milestone has been reached in Vienna’s U2xU5 metro expansion with the successful completion of tunnel boring on Track 2 of the U2 line. This 2-kilometre stretch, driven by tunnel boring machine (TBM) Debohra, connects Matzleinsdorfer Platz to the Augustinplatz emergency exit. 

The project marks a significant step in the city’s largest climate protection initiative. It is designed to reduce urban traffic, cut emissions, and improve public transport efficiency through four new U2 stations: Matzleinsdorfer Platz, Reinprechtsdorfer Straße, Pilgramgasse, and Neubaugasse.

Debohra was manufactured and assembled from over 27,000 parts before being transported to Vienna in early 2024. Measuring 127 metres and weighing 1,300 tonnes, the TBM began its journey through Vienna’s complex geology in autumn 2024.

Excavated material was removed using a central shaft at Matzleinsdorfer Platz. This decision minimized truck traffic through urban streets, avoiding an estimated 20,000 trips and approximately 75 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. These measures reflect a sustainable tunnelling strategy embedded in the project’s planning from the outset.

The next stage involves the partial dismantling of Debohra and repositioning at the original launch site to begin boring the second tunnel. This process includes pulling trailing components through the completed tube for redeployment.

Beyond mobility enhancements, the U2xU5 project is contributing to Vienna’s construction sector and environmental objectives.
