The University of Urbino Carlo Bo and Saipem have launched “GeotherMOOC,” described as the first Massive Open Online Course dedicated to geothermal energy. The free, open-access program examines the potential of geothermal energy as a continuous renewable source capable of providing stable and sustainable electrical and thermal energy.
Promoted by the Saipem People Academy with scientific consultancy from the University of Urbino, the initiative involves experts from the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), the Polytechnics of Turin and Milan, the University of Glasgow, and Saipem. The course is coordinated by Mariella Leporini, Geothermal Energy Product Manager at Saipem, with overall coordination by Professor Alessandro Bogliolo, Rector’s Delegate for Scientific Dissemination and Public Engagement at the University of Urbino.
GeotherMOOC comprises eight lessons delivered via live streaming and subsequently available on demand. Content is provided in Italian and English and covers the geothermal supply chain from geosciences to drilling and surface plant engineering, including innovative solutions such as closed-loop systems and integration with carbon capture and storage.
The first lesson, delivered by Adele Manzella, geophysicist and Senior Researcher at CNR, is already available online. The opening included greetings from Giorgio Calcagnini, Rector of the University of Urbino, and remarks by Alessandro Puliti, CEO of Saipem, who emphasized the role of geothermal energy in energy diversification and the company’s technological innovation. The second lesson will stream on November 26 at 11:00.
The University of Urbino and Saipem state that GeotherMOOC supports the dissemination of scientific and technological skills to advance a sustainable, low-carbon energy future.
