Barcelona’s famous Sagrada Familia has been under construction since 1882, and as was announced on March 20, 2024, is set for completion in 2026.
Furthermore, the Junta Constructora de la Sagrada Familia stated in its annual report that the final stage of the church’s construction began in November of 2023, with the completion of the towers of the Evangelists.
They further added that “The Chapel of the Assumption is expected to be finished in 2025 and the tower of Jesus Christ in 2026.”
Antoni Gaudi’s masterpiece was completed at about 10-15% at the time of his death in 1926, and its construction after this was halted many times due to various reasons, including the Spanish Civil War.
It was during that time, in 1936, when Gaudi’s original plans, drawings, and plaster models were destroyed.
The realized version is based on what was rescued from the famous architect’s work, but partially reconstructed.
Sagrada Familia’s design includes 18 towers, which are devoted to the 12 apostles, four evangelists, Virgin Mary, and Jesus.
Funding for the church was initially secured by donations, while nowadays, it comes from tickets sold to visitors for €25-40 each, amassing a staggering €126.9 million alone last year.
Out of this budget, 52% went to construction and 26% to temple management, according to the annual report.
CNN reports that the church’s construction was being carried out illegally for 137 years, something that was discovered in 2016, and a building permit was finally issued by Barcelona’s city council in 2019.
Upon completion, the Sagrada Familia is going to be Barcelona’s highest building, reaching a height of 172.5 meters, as well as the world’s tallest church, surpassing Germany’s current holder, Ulm Minster, by 10 meters.
Finally, a controversial stairway might also be added to the project, but its development is still under discussion, as it would demand the demolition of nearby housing and offices, which would affect about 1,000 families and businesses. If the staircase’s construction is decided to go forward, it will be scheduled for completion in 2034.
