The end of April 2024 marks a significant milestone for the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension as the tunnel boring machine, Rexy, emerges triumphant from the western underground segment. This achievement brings the project one step closer to enhancing connectivity across Toronto’s west end, extending from York through Etobicoke to Mississauga.

The colossal 750-tonne, 131-meter-long Rexy has successfully completed its part of the journey, breaking through the final wall at the Scarlett Road extraction shaft. Over the past two years, Rexy has diligently carved out one of the twin 6.3-kilometre tunnels starting from Renforth Drive. This critical phase of the project paves the way for the future Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) line to transition from underground to an above-ground section, promising improved transit options and accessibility for the community.
As we celebrate Rexy's accomplishment, its twin, Renny, is not far behind and is expected to reach the same milestone in the coming weeks. The next steps involve the meticulous disassembly of these mechanical giants, which will be removed from the site piece by piece. This operation will soon be open for community members to witness, providing a unique glimpse into the complex world of urban tunnel construction.

Looking ahead, the focus will shift to the eastern underground segment, with preparatory work already underway. This continuous effort ensures that the foundations and structures necessary for the future tunnel portal are set, keeping the project on track for its next phases.
The completion of Rexy’s tunnel marks not just a technical achievement but also a beacon of progress in the city’s expansive transit strategy, fostering connectivity and growth across multiple neighborhoods.
