Malaysian floods: 3 casualties and 36,000 displaced so far

Heavy rainfall in Malaysia has caused 36,000 people to be evacuated in 266 relief centers and has claimed 3 lives so far.

The annual monsoon season in Malaysia started in November and is expected to last as long as April, warns the Malaysian Meteorological Department. Flooding started on Tuesday, February 28 and is forecasted to last until Saturday, March 3.

This is the sixth flooding incident in Malaysia during this season, with tens of thousands of people being evacuated in December as well.

It is worth mentioning that floods in Malaysia are a common phenomenon due to the northeast monsoon, which hits the region annually from November to March.

The National Flood Disaster Agency has warned that dangerous water levels have been reached in 25 rivers.

Finally, 102 landslides have occurred nationwide since November due to heavy rain, with a notable one in the state of Selangor, back in December, which left 16 dead and 17 missing.
