Four of the major tribes of the Amazon were united against the plan of the Brazilian government for the construction of hydroelectric dams in the rivers of the largest rainforest on the planet.

Four of the major tribes of the Amazon were united against the plan of the Brazilian government for the construction of hydroelectric dams in the rivers of the largest rainforest on the planet. The construction of dams was decided without the participation of the local tribes or conducting appropriate environmental studies.

The tribes Munduruku, Apiaká, Kayabi and Rikbaktsa live in areas with unique flora and fauna, which are already receiving massive pressure because of deforestation and other economic activities.

The four tribes issued a statement demanding the immediate cessation of construction works of four dams. They also warned that they would take extreme measures in order not to allow the adoption of new, more invasive projects that threaten their sources of food.

The motive of the government of Brazil behind the construction of dams is the low carbon electricity for the needs of the developing country, whilst achieving climate targets.
