France: "Green" roofs mandatory on all new buildings

In the commercial areas of the country, the ‘green’ roofs will generate electricity and benefit businesses financially.

In the commercial areas of the country, the ‘green’ roofs will generate electricity and benefit businesses financially. 

The roofs of buildings built in commercial zones in France must be covered partially by plants or solar panels that will generate electricity and benefit financially the companies.

That law was defined by the Parliament of the country.

The "green" roofs are insulated and provide energy efficiency, while reducing the amount of energy required heating the buildings during winter and air conditioning in the summer.

Also, they retain rainwater, which helps tackling problems with runoff water, while favoring biodiversity. At the same time it is offered a place for birds to nest.

The "green" roofs are particularly popular in Germany and Australia, and in 2009 in Toronto there was passed a law similar to the aforementioned regulation, in which ‘green’ roofs are mandatory in industrial and residential buildings.
