Exploring Crossrail

Crossrail is one of the biggest projects in Europe, which is on its way since the 15th May, 2009. At the time of writing, over 57 million hours have been worked on Europe’s largest construction project across more than 40 worksites throughout London and the southeast.

After 30 years, Crossrail is the new underground line. Since 1863, where the original Paddington to Farringdon section of the Underground opened, this project seems to be one of the most ambitious transport construction projects undertaken in London. By employing over 10.000 people work on this project, it boosts the health of engineering, construction as well as design industries.

Much of the tunnel construction for the London Underground network was undertaken by hand. Today, 42 kilometres of tunnels are being constructed and will link existing Network Rail services from Reading and Heathrow in the west, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. More than 23 miles (nearly 90%) of train tunnels are finished, with tunnelling due to complete in spring 2015.

What is more, extremely high safety standards are the key factors in the project's supply chains, since there will be safety requirements ensuring that it will minimise disruption and prevent accidents, so as this project to be as safe as possible for everyone.
