A sinkhole appeared under a primary school classroom in the city of Kwekwe, Zimbabwe on Thursday, March 16.
The sinkhole was attributed, by the ZimLive news outlet of Zimbabwe, to illegal mining activity.
More specifically, the tunnel was facilitating gold mining activities, while it is worth mentioning that the International Crisis Group (ICG) estimated in 2020 that about 1.5 million people had turned to artisanal mining due to poverty and unemployment.
At least 17 of the school’s students have so far been reported injured by the event so far.
Finally, it was announced that an investigation will be launched regarding the causes and people responsible for the event.
