A high-speed railway bridge was delivered by assembling 2 large sections into place while another railway bridge, that lies beneath, remained open.
In order to achieve this pioneering attempt, the bridge sections were constructed at an angle and then they were placed into position. The two 7,000 tons girders, each measuring 128 meters, were connected by simultaneously rotating counter-clockwise. Professors from multiple universities calculated the optimum rotating speed and angle of the sections.
The procedure lasted for 73 minutes. Mr. Yang Shibin, head of the construction operation, stated that the project was very challenging. The bridge is very close to the Ningqi Railway which carries more than 60 high speed trains daily. Additionally, the construction is also centimeters away from high-voltage power lines while the rotation attempt had never been tested in China.
The bridge, completed on October 11, 2018, is part of the 305,2 km. Lianyungang-Zhengjiang railway line which links the Lianyungang city in Jiangsu province with the Zhenjiang city in Zhejiang province and is expected to open next September. The line will support trains that would travel at operating speeds of about 250km/h. China has the longest high-speed rail network in the world which is expected to grow more, reaching 30,000 km of track by 2020.
