Record setting rains that fell on Sunday in Texas and Oklahoma are still wreaking havoc as flooding continues in the region. The storms dumped enough water that the rivers and creek banks were not able to contain all of the wet weather flow. Runoff peaked as late as Monday in these areas causing the National Weather Service to advise of continued flooding threats.
According to a recent study, the number of people living in flood susceptible regions has increased in the last 20 years, causing a significant rise of deaths and associated financial damage. The study was approved for publication in Geophysical Research Letters and was based on satellite nightlight images.
The torrential rains in Japan have caused flooding and landslides that have forced more than 100,000 people to flee their homes. At least 27 people were injured and 25 missing according to the authorities.
