China is considering an extension of a railway line that will link the country of Nepal via a tunnel under Mount Everest. This is according to Chinese state media. There is serious skepticism as to whether the project will ever get off the ground, as this is just the latest proposal in a series of ambitious rail schemes Beijing is examining. The project is expected to be completed by 2020 and would forge a crucial trade link between China and India.
On Tuesday a magnitude-7.3 earthquake shook the impoverished country of Nepal, this is the second earthquake to hit the impoverished country in less than a month. On Wednesday, officials with bullhorns walked through the badly damaged streets of Chautara, a small town northeast of Kathmandu, calling for people to leave buildings in danger of collapsing.
The 2016 monsoon season has been particularly severe in Nepal and has resulted in mass flooding and dozens of landslides. Reports indicate that there have been 73 deaths in 19 separate landslides in a single week. The landslides typically occur as a result of the heavy rainfall in areas with unstable soil conditions.
Heavy rainfall in Nepal continues and mass flooding is causing severe damage. Flash flooding and landslides in Butwal in the Rupandehi district just over a week ago were responsible for over 58 deaths in two days.
