A 500,000-pound slab is up to crash down from a canyon wall to the base of an Arizona dam. In this type of rock, erosion is very common. The Bureau of Reclamation has put rafting trips on hold, forbidding access rafting trips on hold, until the slab to be kept in place.
Chris Watt, Bureau of Reclamation spokesman said "It's just plain luck that it didn't cause more damage because we don't know how big of chunks are going to fall. If more of it falls, that's a real concern."
Three people will drill bolts into the sandstone above the crack so as to be safe for the crews.
"Temperatures can top 110 degrees on the face of the wall, limiting the hours the crew can work," Chris Watt said.
Chris watt added "This crack is the largest one in years, and workers at the dam have been watching it closely,"
The damage is scheduled to be finished within October.
