The Canadian space company, Thoth Technology Inc., received approval in the patent application filed in the competent US authorities for a ... space elevator. This is an elevator that will have an entrance on the Earth's surface and its output will be at a height of 20 km! On the roof of the lift there will be a platform from which spacecrafts will be able to begin their journey.
Theoretically the boot of a spacecraft from such a height would make the launch easier, safer and it will offer a significantly lower cost.
The TothX Tower as it is called is a structure that will consist of an outer set of inflatable sections made of specially reinforced materials. Inside there will be an elevator with a pneumatic mechanism. The stability of this huge construction will be provided by large flywheels. The flywheel is a very "heavy" wheel, which is usually adjusted to a machine for smoothing its movement. Flywheels are also used in cars.
The flywheels operate as compressors to generate the required air pressure for the mechanism of the elevator. Apart from its use as a launch pad for spacecrafts, this tower will provide telecommunication services and will generate wind power.
